Interview by kisken

1) Overall, which was a better series: Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel? Why?

Toughie. In some ways, it's hard for me to think of them as seperate series. They do have seperate identities, and are unique, but they're like fraternal twins, living in different cities.

In terms of consistency, I'd say Angel was more consistently good. The episodes are, in general, of a consistently high quality. Buffy had higher-highs than did Angel, in terms of quality, but, also had lower-lows. Buffy's best episodes are better than Angel's best episodes. Angel holds together better as a whole, I think, both thematically, and as a single narrative, from beginning to end.

Strangely, on the whole, even given the fact that I think Angel was consistently better, I prefer Buffy. Partially, I think I identify with the characters a bit more. They are outsiders; their goals are pretty much saving the world and each other. Angel's about redemption, and about making choices in a war you can't win. It's bleaker, which is more real, but also a tad harder to enjoy per se, on an entertainment level. Of course, the fact that there aren't easy answers, and that fighting on is what matters, those lessons might be more meaningful in the long run.

2) You have an entire day in which there are no consequences for your actions. What do you do?

This is sorta tricky, mostly, because, I think too much, and when I first read the question, the most honest, authentic answer, which, at some level violates the spirit of the question, was basically, I'd do nothing out of the ordinary. Without consequences (good or ill) there is no meaning to what we do. If there isn't any meaning to what we do, if out actions don't matter, then, all that matters is what we do.

Without consequences, well, the only thing I can think of for certain, is that I'd for darn sure not be at work. Beyond that? I've no idea. I'd probably be paralyzed by inaction, certain that a)there must be some eventual consequence (law of conservation, afterall), b) that there's little reason to do anything, as even good things that might be accomplished would be for naught, or c)try to figure out the most advantageous use of this no consequences gig, and never figure out the optimum use for it before the day was finished.

So, really, the answer is that I'd not do all that much different, except that I wouldn't go to work.

3) Kate is a pretty, pretty flower. Which flower are you? Why?

I like pansies and columbines, so we'll go with that, I guess. They're colorful, dignified, and elegant. But, the thing of it is, flowers are, really, quite functional things, and that's what matters. Flowers look the way they do to attract insects, so that they can fullfill their purpose. A flower doesn't much care how it looks, so long as it fullfills its purpose. There isn't any vanity to a flower. And a flower's beauty is not assigned to it by other flowers. What I know is this: it doesn't so much matter how I look, because, ultimately, that's not the important thing. My value comes from that which isn't seen. I am what I am, and if I am evaluated by the surface, so be it, but in that moment, what really matters is lost. Who I am is not how I look. And I'm largely okay with how I look. Well, I could stand to lose a few pounds, but, hey, I'm lazy.

4) If you could never read another book again or never watch another telelvision show again, which would you choose? Why?

Do you mean pick between TV and books? Or, pick a particular book or television show that I could never watch or read again?

Well, right now, I'd chose TV over books. The reason? I've gotten out of the habit of reading on a regular basis, and it seems right now like too much effort. See the lazy part, above. I fell out of the habit when I was always at work, and TV's largely less effort.

Books, however, are full of valuable information. And I will say, I depend a great deal on that fact that you can, in fact, find out anything in the world from books. It's always been a comfort. But, these days, I just get the cliffs notes online, or filtered somehow. It's comforting knowing it's there, and that someone could read it, but right now, it can be someone other than me.

Of course, if I were making this choice in a world where no one else could read, or access to first sources was necessary for survival, books would win. But, that's not where I live currently.

If  you mean, a *specific* TV show or book, well, if I've already read it or seen it, it's already in my brain, and therefore, I have access to it. And, it's silly to give up something you're never seen or read, right?

5) Dogpatch or River City? In which hell would you rather be stuck for a year? Why?

Easiest question on the list. Much rather be in Dogpatch. I've lived in River City, and despite the fact that my mother is there, and the music is better, the people in general are so awful, that I'd take the well-intended, if less intelectually gifted, denizens of Dogpatch over the people of River city anyday.

I interested in what you might ask me. Due to time constraints the meme will most likely die with me.
